Ellen went into her room and closed the door behind her while she got the key to the medicine cabinet. The medicine cabinet was in the broom closet in the kitchen, a white steel box with a green cross on the front. She found the right pills and locked the cabinet immediately, then filled a glass from the tap and gave her mom her medicine. She swallowed them all at once.

Over and out, Lilja mumbled and sat in her chair next to the yellow table, lit a cigarette, and looked blankly out over the bay.

That’s better, she murmured, and Ellen went into her bedroom. The blackout curtains were still pulled across the window, but instead of opening them, she turned on the light. She let herself fall back onto her twin-size kid’s bed, which she didn’t even notice was uncomfortable, and yanked the script out of her bag.
